Nazarbayev University Research Animal Facility (NURAF) – A hub for cutting-edge life science research
The Nazarbayev University Research Animal Facility (NURAF) is a state-of-the-art facility for life sciences and medical research, initiated in November 2016 based on concept design by SmithGroupJJR. This two-story facility, approximately 3,000 m² in size, supports multi-species research in compliance with international AAALAC guidelines. Focusing on surgical research and pharmaceutical development, it offers a world-class research environment with advanced equipment and stringent biosafety standards (ABSL-2).
NURAF is organized into six functional zones: Animal Housing and Procedures, Cage Processing, Scientific Support, General Support, Staff Areas, and Building Support. The first floor accommodates surgical and recovery areas for large animals (dogs, sheep, pigs, etc.), while the second floor is dedicated to small animal research (mice, rabbits, etc.) and cancer research. Each space is designed to optimize airflow, temperature, humidity, and noise control, maximizing animal welfare and research efficiency.
