General Hong Beom-do Memorial Park: A space honoring the Independence Movement hero
The General Hong Beom-do Memorial Park was designed in 2021 in Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan, to honor General Hong Beom-do, a distinguished independence activist and hero of the Battle of Bongodong. This project aims to embody national respect and historical value, creating a symbolic space that inherits the noble spirit of the independence movement. The memorial park, built with 700 million KRW of national funding, covers an area of 1,067㎡ (323 pyeong). It includes a worship area shaped to represent the terrain of the Battle of Bongodong, an exhibition hall introducing the independence achievements of General Hong Beom-do and independence activist Gye Bong-woo, and a resting space with landscaping and shaded shelters, providing visitors with both historical significance and a comfortable experience.
General Hong Beom-do moved to Manchuria after Japan’s annexation of Korea in 1910, training independence forces and serving as the commander-in-chief of the Korean Independence Army. In 1920, he led victories against Japanese forces in the Battles of Bongodong and Cheongsanri, demonstrating the Korean people's determination for independence to the world. He later devoted himself to the independence movement and training future generations in the Maritime Province and Kazakhstan. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal in 1962 and the Republic of Korea Medal in 2021.
